The Giants’ running back battle heats up: Devin Singletary started ahead of Tyrone Tracy Jr. in what could ultimately become a four-man rotation.
New York surprisingly rotated all three of its top running backs last week. Cam Skattebo started, but Tracy also played on the first drive before Skattebo reentered and shared time with Singletary. All three were finished by early in the second quarter, suggesting there wasn’t a significant gap between them on the depth chart. Head coach John Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Matt Nagy have generally favored two- or three-man backfield rotations.
New York signed Najee Harris earlier in the week, but he didn’t play in this game. He will need time to ramp up and might not play next week, either, though he reportedly expects to have a significant role in the offense.
Skattebo was among the starters who rested this week, leaving Singletary and Tracy to rotate throughout the first half. While New York could keep four running backs, Singletary and Tracy are likely competing for playing time, and Singletary appears to have the edge. Tracy notably struggled in pass protection last week, while Singletary has graded well in that area in recent seasons. That could leave the Giants with a three-man rotation of Skattebo, Harris and Singletary in Week 1.
The Cowboys’ backfield battle takes a turn: Malik Davis started this week after not playing until the third quarter last week.
Javonte Williams was the Cowboys’ starter last season, with Davis ending the year as a backup. Fifth-round rookie Jaydon Blue spent most of the season as a healthy inactive, while seventh-round rookie Phil Mafah missed most of last season due to injury. Cowboys coaches and beat writers have made it clear that they hoped Blue or Mafah would win the backup job.
Last week, Blue started the game, with Mafah rotating in throughout the first half. Blue was done at halftime, Mafah started the third quarter and Davis took over later. This week, Davis started, with Blue rotating in later in the first drive. This suggests Davis is currently the favorite for the backup job, but the situation is likely unsettled and could be a top storyline in the third week of the preseason. It’s also possible the Cowboys add a running back after the third week of the preseason.
Blue was worth drafting in the late rounds when it seemed clear he was on track to win the backup job, but this is now a situation to avoid.
